A man with red gums

If your dentist has diagnosed you with gingivitis, you may be relieved to hear that this early stage of gum disease is in fact reversible. The good news is that with just a few adjustments to your oral hygiene routine, you can effectively eliminate it and protect your teeth and gums from harm. Here’s what you need to know about gingivitis, and how to get your smile back on track after diagnosis.

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. It is defined as an inflammation of the gums that is caused by a buildup of plaque, the bacterial film that forms on your teeth that is hard to remove by brushing alone. If left untreated, gingivitis can turn into a more serious form of gum disease known as periodontitis.

The good news is that gingivitis is completely reversible. However, once it has become periodontitis, it can only be managed, not cured. Thus, it is extremely important to do everything you can to stop it from worsening, as periodontitis is far more serious and could eventually cost you your teeth!

Warning signs of Gingivitis

While only your dentist can diagnose gingivitis, there are several warning signs to look out for on your own. These include:

  • Inflammation of the gums.
  • Tender gums.
  • Bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth.
  • Persistent bad breath.
  • Sensitive teeth.

How Can I Cure Gingivitis?

If you have been diagnosed with gingivitis, the good news is that there’s still an excellent chance it can be reversed. To do this, you’ll need to be diligent about your oral hygiene routine. This includes:

  • Brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Flossing daily.
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products.

With regular care, your gums should return to normal, but don’t stop there. Be sure to continue the upkeep on your smile to prevent gingivitis from returning. Furthermore, be sure to visit your dentist every six months for your regular, preventive oral health exam and cleaning appointments.

Remember, although it may be scary to hear that you have gingivitis, the good news is that with a little effort, you can eliminate this infection and restore your oral health in about two weeks to protect your teeth and gums from more advanced stages of periodontal disease.
