Tooth sensitivity may not seem like that big of a deal until you can’t enjoy your morning coffee or that delicious ice cream cone you’ve been craving. So naturally if your teeth aren’t already sensitive, you probably don’t want to do anything to make them that way. But what about when it comes to getting veneers? Sure, it would be great to have a gorgeous grin, but if it’s only going to make your teeth hurt, what’s the point? Here’s what you can expect from veneers, and how to keep your newly improved smile from causing you pain.
Do Veneers Cause Sensitivity?
Many people believe that veneers could cause them sensitivity because in order to get them, your dentist needs to remove a small amount of enamel from each tooth. Thankfully, your mouth will be numb during this procedure, but once the numbing wears off, it is not uncommon to experience some mild sensitivity while you wear temporary veneers. The great news is that once your permanent veneers are cemented in place, this sensitivity should go away completely.
What Can I Do to Prevent Sensitivity with Temporary Veneers?
Unfortunately, while you cannot completely prevent sensitivity from occurring, there is a lot you can do to reduce your risk of experiencing it. First, avoid foods that are very hot, cold, acidic, or sweet, as these can easily irritate the nerves in your teeth. You can also try brushing with a sensitive toothpaste that can help infuse your enamel with minerals to protect the nerves from exposure to extreme temperatures. Furthermore, avoid using any products like white strips, as these can also cause sensitivity.
What if I am Still Experiencing Sensitivity After My Permanent Veneers are Placed?
If you’ve had your permanent veneers placed and are still experiencing sensitivity several weeks after treatment, give your dentist a call. Though this is likely temporary, they may still have you come into the office to rule out any issues with the size or shape of the veneer, or to adjust the cement holding them to your teeth.
Remember, your permanent veneers should protect your teeth from sensitivity and should not cause any discomfort. If you notice anything that doesn’t feel right, reach out to your dentist at your earliest convenience for help.
