It’s no secret that if you want to maintain a healthy smile, you need to cut back on sugary sweets. However, many people aren’t aware that certain foods not only prevent cavities and other dental problems, but actually improve the health of your teeth and gums. Better yet, the foods that benefit your oral health are things you should already be eating as part of a balanced diet. Read on to learn how these six foods can keep your smile healthy and bright!

1. Yogurts & Cheeses

Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt work wonders for your dental health. Firstly, they help your mouth produce more saliva, which protects tooth enamel by neutralizing the cavity-causing acids from bacteria. They’re also rich in protein and calcium, two nutrients that strengthen your teeth and jawbone. Just make sure to choose sugar-free or unsweetened yogurt to minimize your sugar intake. If you have an allergy or sensitivity to dairy, you can still get sufficient calcium and protein from non-dairy milks like soy or almond milk.

2. Leafy Greens

Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens are a staple in an overall healthy diet. They provide valuable vitamins and minerals that benefit your whole body, such as B vitamins and folic acid, while also being low in sugar. Plus, they encourage saliva production.

3. Apples

The next time you’re craving something sweet, try reaching for an apple instead of a candy bar. Apples are more effective at satisfying a sweet tooth than you may think! Not only do they help you avoid processed sugars, but their fibrous skins actually scrub your teeth clean as you chew them.

4. Carrots & Celery

Like apples, veggies like celery and carrots clean your teeth as you eat them. Additionally, they’re excellent sources of vitamin C, vitamin A, and fiber, all of which contribute to overall wellness.

5. Almonds

Almonds and other nuts are great for oral health because they’re low in sugar yet high in protein and calcium. Many healthcare professionals actually recommend almonds as a midmorning or midafternoon snack. In addition to satisfying the need to munch on something, they keep you full enough to prevent mindlessly grazing on other snacks that may contain more sugar.

6. Lean Proteins

Protein is incredibly beneficial for your dental health, but so is phosphorous. It keeps your teeth and jawbone strong. Luckily, many lean proteins have both! Make sure to incorporate items like fish, meat, and poultry (or tofu) into your diet.

Oral health is tied so closely to overall health, so keeping your teeth and gums in great condition is essential for maintaining full-body wellness. If you have questions about your current diet or which foods you should add to it, ask your dentist for personalized recommendations!
