The field of orthodontics has really come a long way in terms of techniques and technology. Today, fixing problems like misalignment, uneven bites, and gaps in between teeth is easier than ever. However, orthodontics has quite a long history and there are many facts about the field you may not be aware of. Learn some fun facts about braces today from an orthodontist yourself!

The Field of Orthodontics is Much Older Than You Think

The very first metal braces, invented by French physician Pierre Fauchard, are almost 300 years old! Back in 1728, Fauchard used a Bandeau or horseshoe-shaped piece of iron to help expand the palate. This research was published in his book titled “The Surgeon Dentist” and was accompanied by other methods for straightening teeth. However, the brackets that are well-known today wouldn’t exist until 1915.

Thank NASA for Today’s Modern Orthodontic Materials

The metal alloy used to make braces was developed by NASA and originally designed as heat resistant material for space shuttles. Because of its malleability, it provides a perfect application for applying gentle pressure to teeth. NASA also created a material known as transparent polycrystalline alumina, which is used for clear (or “invisible”) braces. Not only is this material incredibly smooth and round, but it’s stronger than steel!

You Can Do Far More With Braces Than Just Straighten Teeth

While braces are ideal for straightening teeth, they have many applications outside of that. This includes:

  • Fixing irregular bites (i.e. overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites)
  • Treating issues like difficulty chewing, swallowing, and even breathing
  • Improving speech problems
  • Removing gaps in between teeth (including diastema, which refers to a gap in between the two front teeth)

Regarding Orthodontics, The Egyptians Were Ahead of Their Time

The ancient Egyptians were known for exploring many techniques and technologies, we would recognize today, including braces and even dental implants! Back then, they would make cords from dried sheep and horse intestines, then tie them around metal posts to teeth to make them straighter. In most cases, they used this technique to keep teeth in mummies straight in the afterlife. With that said, the Egyptians were certainly head of their time!

All Orthodontists are Also Dentists

If you’re seeing an orthodontist to receive braces, you’re also seeing a dentist, period. However, not all dentists can call themselves orthodontists. They need to receive postgraduate education in orthodontics on top of graduating from dental school. Furthermore, the American Association of Orthodontists notes that only 6% of dentists are orthodontists, making them a relatively rare commodity.

You Don’t Have to Be a Kid to Receive Braces

While metal braces are notoriously associated with children and teenagers, adults can receive them too! If you’ve always wanted to straighten your teeth or fix other concerns with your smile, get in touch with an orthodontist today!
