4 Things That’ll Happen After You’re Done with Braces

A patient about to experience life after braces

As you near the end of your braces treatment, you probably feel more excited. Finally, your dentist will remove these brackets and wires from your teeth! That said, it’d be wise to consider what’ll happen once your braces are off. Doing so will let you prepare for when your teeth are fully straightened. Luckily, your Dallas dentist is here to set the record straight. Here are four things you can expect for your life after braces!

Eating Food Will Feel Different

During your time with braces, you’ve probably avoided certain foods. Furthermore, you adjusted to having brackets and wires on your teeth due to chewing over a year’s worth of meals. Given these facts, your mouth is now used to certain sensations when you eat.

When you start eating without braces, then, the experience will feel different. You might sense some new flavors and textures for the first time in a while. Meals may even seem strange since you aren’t feeling metal when you chew.

Your Teeth Might Be Sensitive

For over a year (probably around 18 months), your braces have been moving your teeth with constant pressure. That tension is finally relieved when the dental appliance is removed from your mouth. The sudden lack of pressure, though, can make your teeth temporarily sensitive. After all, your mouth has learned to treat braces as part of your tooth surface.

While waiting for this sensitivity to wear off, you should probably avoid eating crunchy or chewy foods. The latter items would only add to any lingering soreness you’re experiencing.

You May Notice Some Tooth Stains

Even if you care for your teeth while wearing braces, they can get discolored or calcified during the straightening process. Consequently, you may notice previously-hidden stains once the appliance is removed.

Thankfully, this issue can be addressed with suitable dental treatments. In fact, many orthodontists offer professional teeth whitening to solve this very issue. Still, you should probably wait at least a month or two before trying to whiten your smile. Any sooner and the bleaching agents might aggravate pre-existing tooth sensitivity.

Your Smile Will Look Different

Of course, you’ll see that your smile doesn’t look the same after the braces come off. That was the entire point of treatment! However, you may be surprised by just *how* different it seems appearance-wise. Remember, braces do more than just straighten teeth — they also work to align your jaw, which changes the very shape of your smile.

Knowing the items above will help you enjoy your straightened smile even more. If you have other concerns about life after braces, though, feel free to talk to your dentist.
