How Long Does a Dental Crown Last?

All-ceramic dental crownsDental crowns have been used for generations to save compromised teeth. They are designed to provide a long-term solution, but how long do crowns last? Many factors affect the dental crown lifespan, but most last for about 10 years. However, it wouldn’t be unusual for your crown to thrive for a decade or more with the right care. Here’s what you need to know to get the most from your investment.

Materials and Location

Metal was the go-to material used for crowns for generations because it’s affordable and durable. However, you have many options available today. As an alternative to silver or gold, modern crowns are made of all-ceramic materials. Metal restorations have a slightly longer lifespan, but the location of the restoration is also important. Back teeth naturally experience more wear and tear from chewing. As a result, crowns on molars may need to be replaced sooner than those in the front of the mouth.

Oral Hygiene Habits

Dental crowns can’t get cavities, but the underlying teeth are vulnerable to decay. Bacteria can gain access to the tooth through cracks that can form in the cement over the years. Plaque and tartar harbor cavity-causing bacteria.

You can keep cavities and infections at bay with good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss every night before going to bed. Besides keeping your mouth clean at home, visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup.

Diet

The foods you eat can also affect the life expectancy of your crown. Hard and chewy foods can cause more pressure on your restoration. Sticky foods can cling to it or weaken the bond between the crown and your tooth. Your dentist will also recommend moderating sugary foods and drinks.

Lifestyle Habits

Certain lifestyle habits can cause your crown to fail, like using your teeth in place of tools or scissors. Chewing on inedible objects can also damage the restoration. Don’t use your teeth to open chip bags or loosen bottle lids to get the most from your crown. Don’t chew on your fingernails or pencils. If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, ask your dentist for a nightguard. It will provide a cushion between your upper and lower arches to protect your natural teeth and crown.

No matter the reason you need a crown, it can serve you for many years with the right attention. You’ll benefit from a long-term solution that looks and feels just like a real tooth.
