Why Does My Enamel Need to Be Removed Before Receiving Veneers?

Did you know that according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the demand for cosmetic dental work has essentially doubled within the last five years? This means that more people than ever before are opting to enhance their smiles, and in turn, their livelihoods. Some patients turn toward veneers to achieve this; however, if you’ve heard of this treatment, you’ve maybe heard that you’ll have to have some of your enamel removed beforehand. Here’s more from your trusted cosmetic dentist about why this is a necessary step of the process!

Why Does Enamel Need to Be Removed for Veneers?

The main selling point of veneers is their versatility; they can address a wide range of issues including things like staining, chips and cracks, gaps between teeth, and more. This is because they’re expertly crafted to blend in seamlessly with your smile. Your dentist will customize them to look just like your natural teeth before bonding them to the outer surfaces of the teeth being treated—but before they can do this, the teeth in question need to have some enamel removed.

Though this might sound a little frightening, it’s nothing you need to worry about at all; more importantly, it ensures the lasting success of your veneers. If your veneers were placed without any prep work, they’d appear bulky and unnatural, thus defeating their purpose! They’d also have trouble staying firmly attached. But by treating your teeth for the veneers, your dentist can ensure they lay flush and perfectly cover any present aesthetic issues.

How Much Enamel Is Removed?

As with anything else they do, your dentist will take a conservative approach when it comes to removing enamel from your teeth in preparation for veneers. They will only remove what’s absolutely necessary, which in this case is a fairly small amount: roughly half a millimeter, or about the thickness of a fingernail.

The steps following this part of the process are relatively straightforward: impressions are used to create your veneers, which are then bonded to the treated teeth when ready. Sometimes temporary veneers are placed, which serve as a “test drive” and give patients a chance to experience how their new smile feels. Once your permanent solutions are finished and bonded, you’ll enjoy all of their awesome benefits for many years to come.

Remember, since enamel cannot grow back, it’s imperative that teeth being treated for veneers always have protection, whether it’s temporary or permanent veneers. This is a lasting alteration; however, it’s certainly a beneficial one!
