Lost Your Dental Crown? Here’s How to Handle It

So, you’re out with a friend, eating when all of a sudden—POP! Your dental crown comes loose and falls onto your tongue! What are you supposed to do now? Losing a dental crown can be an alarming experience, but it’s important to stay calm and take action right away.

Whether your crown falls out unexpectedly or you notice it missing, here’s a handy checklist to ensure you handle it properly.

1. Retrieve and Inspect the Crown

If you’ve lost your dental crown, try to find it as soon as possible. Check your mouth carefully to see if the crown has fallen out completely or if it’s still partially attached to the tooth.

Once you find the crown, examine it for any damage. If it looks intact and clean, you may be able to reattach it temporarily. However, if the crown is damaged or contaminated, do not try to reattach it yourself.

2. Clean the Crown

If your crown is dirty but undamaged, gently rinse it off to remove any debris. You should also rinse your mouth with warm salty water to ensure the area is clean. Avoid using any harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on the crown.

3. Temporary Reattachment

In some cases, you may be able to temporarily reattach the crown using over-the-counter dental cement or temporary dental adhesive. Follow the instructions provided with the product carefully and heed any warnings. Apply a small amount of adhesive to the inside of the crown before carefully placing it back onto the tooth.

4. Call Your Dentist

Even if you’ve managed to temporarily reattach the crown, it’s important to visit your dentist as soon as possible. Losing a crown can expose the underlying tooth to bacteria and potential damage.

If you experience any pain or discomfort, contact your dentist immediately for an emergency appointment. They will prioritize your case and provide same-day care to take care of your prosthetic and any issues that may have arisen.

Losing a dental crown can happen unexpectedly, but that doesn’t mean you should be unprepared! Use this checklist to keep your crown clean and healthy while waiting for your appointment. Once you see your dentist, they can fix your crown and restore your smile in no time.
