Dentures Aren’t Just for Seniors: 3 Ways That Younger People Can Lose their Teeth

For people who are missing teeth, dentures can mean an incredible improvement to their quality of life. Dentures are able to simulate natural teeth effectively enough to allow tooth loss patients to chew and talk the way they did when they had all of their teeth.

They’re often associated with older patients, but people of all ages can lose their teeth and therefore benefit from either full or partial dentures. Here are some reasons that some people could come to need dentures.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy can cause a lot of shock to the body, but it’s consequences on teeth aren’t talked about often enough. As the body moves nutrients to the growing baby, they relocated away from the mouth. This can sometimes cause people’s teeth to fall out.

It typically isn’t a good idea for pregnant women to get dental implant surgery, so dentures can be a great way for them to replace any teeth that they’ve lost.

Periodontal Disease

It’s estimated that around 50% of adults in the U.S. have some form of gum disease. While it can be fairly mild, in advanced cases gum disease can lead to bone and tooth loss. In other cases, infections can seep into the tooth, meaning that they’ll need to be removed.

This can happen to people at any age, and if they lose teeth, a set of partial dentures can help them quickly and efficiently replace them.

Teenagers

Teenagers lose teeth to sports and other accidents all the time, which can negatively affect their self-esteem. Naturally, they’ll want to fill the gap in their smile as fast as possible. However, dental implants are typically not recommended for teenagers—their jaws are still growing, which could cause the dental implant to shift or fall out as time goes on.

For that reason, partial dentures can make an excellent tooth replacement option for teenagers, especially if they’re interested in getting dentures when they reach adulthood.

As you can see, there are a lot of ways to lose teeth, which means that all kinds of people can benefit from the confidence and security that dentures can provide.
